Will you go to Heaven?

Let’s first define what it actually means to be a ‘good person’.

Good! But by what standard?
Using our own self-defined standard doesn’t mean much. The only true standard that matters is God’s. After all, we are not the ultimate Judge, He is.

God is not like us. He is perfect and His moral standard is perfection. To be good is to be without sin. Sin is when we disobey God’s commands. The truth is, we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

God is moral; which means He hates evil and loves what is good. He wrote a moral standard, the Ten Commandments, to show what is right
and wrong.

The ‘good person’ test
Compare yourself against this standard. Be honest, God can’t be fooled.

TEN COMMANDMENTS
You shall have no other gods before Me.
(Have you always loved God above all else)
You shall not make for yourself an idol.
(Carved in wood, stone or your own mind.)
You shall not take God’s name in vain.
(Misusing God’s name. OMG, Jesus Christ.)
Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. Honour your father and mother. You shall not murder.
(God considers hatred to be as murder)
You shall not commit adultery.
(This includes lust and fornication)
You shall not steal.
(The value is irrelevant)
You shall not lie.
(The severity is irrelevant)
You shall not covet.
(Have you desired other people’s stuff?)

These sum up God’s moral law. Sadly, we’ve all fallen short of them, and because God is good, He must punish evil wherever it is found—including within us.

The payment required for our sin is death, which is an eternal place called Hell. Yet God is also rich in mercy, so let’s find out if there is a way we can be forgiven.

Some think doing good deeds will make up for their sin, but once we’ve committed a crime, good works can’t undo it. No good judge would release a criminal just for doing a few nice things. The wages of sin is death, not good deeds. Our human effort can’t save us.

Others think if they stop sinning or repent, God will overlook their past sins. Again, no good judge would release a criminal just because they’re sorry and promise not to do it again. Of course they should be sorry and not do it again, but justice must still be served. We too should be sorry for our sin. We should confess it to God and turn away from it, but repentance can’t pay for our sin.

How can we escape God’s judgement?
‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ – John 3:16
How does believing in Jesus satisfy God’s justice and save us from His judgement?

Jesus was born of a virgin and lived a perfect sinless life. He then willingly died on a cross as a payment for sin. He was buried and three days later rose from the dead. His resurrection was witnessed by over five hundred people.

‘But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.’ – Romans 5:8
Jesus died on behalf of sinners like us. God’s justice has been satisfied by His death.
‘For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.’ – 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus was truly God and truly Man, therefore He could taste death for everyone.
‘For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God’ – 1 Peter 3:18

The death and resurrection of Jesus means God can legally forgive you and grant you everlasting life, not because you’re good, but because He is good.

To receive this forgiveness, God calls you to repent and believe in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Don’t trust in yourself or your own efforts, instead turn to God and trust only in Jesus. Through His death and resurrection you can have everlasting life. It is a free gift to all who trust in Him.

‘Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ – Acts 4:12

‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ – Romans 6:23

‘[God] commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness’ – Acts 17:30-31

‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved’ – Acts 16:31
